In June 1943, future-President George H. W. Bush was commissioned as the youngest naval aviator at the time. Later, while flying a TBM with VT-51 (from the USS San Jacinto (CVL-30)), his Avenger was shot down on 2 September 1944 over the Pacific island of Chichi JimaHowever, he released his payload and hit the radio tower target before being forced to bail out over water. Both of his crewmates died. He was rescued at sea by the American submarine USS Finback (SS-230). He later received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Flying the Grumman TBF "Avenger" Torpedo Bomber (1944) (23:59)
The Grumman TBF "Avenger" torpedo bomber was President George H.W. Bush Sr's aircraft in World War 2. See the film used to train pilots to fly it.The Avenger was a tough and accurate aircraft that had a reputation for taking punishment and bringing it's crew home. It handled both bombs and torpedoes. Relatively easy to fly, the big Avenger was surprisingly nimble. The TBF could pack up to 500 lb bombs or one Mk1 13-2 torpedo, and with all three tanks topped up with 335 gallons of fuel, could strike targets up to 260 miles away. More than 7,500 TBF/TBM Avengers were produced in 20 variants, which fought with distinction in most major naval battles in the Pacific and was well liked by the Royal navy. It was also the heaviest single engine aircraft in World War 2. The "TBF" was the Grumman version; the "TBM" was produced my General Motors aircraft division. "See the TBF at an air show near you -- they're still flying!" 1. Just as good if not better, than the "21st Century Toys 1/18 TBF-1 AVENGER 5 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Jun 2020

Just as good if not better, as the "21st Century Toys 1/18 TBF-1 AVENGER" being sold for between $500 and $600 out there. At this price and free shipping it was truly a bargain. Most are charging $40 for shipping.
I do have the North Atlantic TBF, from 21st Century, so I can compare them. I swear they came out of the same factory.

  2. Beautifully Detailed TBF Avenger 5 Star Review

1/18 scale really brings out the detail in this beautifully painted Avenger. Impressive display after easy minimal assembly.

    I love it!

  3. Beautiful Avenger Model, fitting tribute to Bush 41 5 Star Review

Very nicely finished model. Paint finish markings and subtle weathering is very well done. Makes for an impressive display.

  4. Extra Special Aircraft! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 18th Dec 2018

The detail on this TBF Avenger is absolutely amazing and it’s extra special since it was flown by former President George Bush. Love it!

  5. Unusual product purchased as a gift 5 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Apr 2018

I cannot rate the final product as it is still in its box. It is to be a present to a family member. Taking a quick peek through the plastic wrap it seems as though it will be a MOST impressive piece at almost 3 ft. wide.

I WILL say the shipping was lightning fast !! It arrived in just a couple of days; so fast I was shocked to see it at my door. Certainly willing to come back to Aikens again for future shopping.
