5th FS/ 52nd FG, USAAF, Western Desert 1943 The 52nd Fighter Group was activated on 15th January 1941 at Selfridge Field, Michigan. In preparation for a deployment to the Western Desert the now squadron equipped Spitfire MkVs shipped to Gibraltar and personnel sailed in a convoy in October, 1942. They fought with the 12th AF in North Africa and Italy.
