Pilot: Unteroffizier Fran Schwaiger Castel Benito, Libya, February, 1942. The Messerschmitt Me109 was GermanyÌ_ÌÇÌ__Ì_ÌÇ_Ì_ÌÇåÎÌàÌ_åÇÌ_åöÌ_ÌÇÌ__Ì_ÌÇ__'s premier fighter during WWII, with 30,573 craft produced between 1939 and 1945 (accounting for 57% of all fighter production). The modern design of the Me109 ensured it scored more aerial victories than any other Allied or Axis aircraft. The Me109 underwent a series of improvements throughout its lifetime, and one of these was the Me109E-1, which featured two 7.92mm MG 17s above the engine and two MG 17s in the wings. It also featured the FuG 7 radio set and Reflexvisier gunsight, with 1183 examples of this version being built. Dragon Warbirds has launched a fine new model of an Me109E-1 decked out in the colors and markings of 9./JG 2. The unit Jagdgeschwader 2 was formed on 1 May 1939 and was named after the famous WWI Red Baron. The unit participated in the Battle of Britain with its Me109E fighters flying from bases in Cherbourg and Normandy, doing battle against BritainÌ_ÌÇÌ__Ì_ÌÇ_Ì_ÌÇåÎÌàÌ_åÇÌ_åöÌ_ÌÇÌ__Ì_ÌÇ__'s gallant Spitfires.
