US Navy VF 27 USS Princeton- CVL 23 F-6 F3 Hellcat, Pilot Lt. James "Red" Shirley 7 Victories - WWII Ace. The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a United States Navy carrier based fighter aircraft developed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat. Although the F6F bore a family resemblance to the Wildcat, it was a completely new design powered by a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800. Some tagged it as the "Wildcat's big brother". The Hellcat and the Vought F4U Corsair were the primary USN fighters during the second half of World War II. The Hellcat proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history, destroying 5,171 aircraft while in service with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps (5,163 in the Pacific and eight more during the invasion of Southern France), plus 52 with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm during World War II. Postwar, the Hellcat aircraft was systematically phased out of front line service, but finally retired as late as 1954 as a night-fighter in composite squadrons.

The Grumman F6F Hellcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft of World War II. Designed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat and to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it was the United States Navy's dominant fighter in the second half of the Pacific War. In gaining that role, it prevailed over its faster competitor, the Vought F4U Corsair, which initially had problems with visibility and carrier landings.

  1. Completed collection 5 Star Review

Posted by on 14th Apr 2014

I've finally completed my collection of WWII aircraft with the purchase of this F-6F Hellcat in 1/48 scale. I started collecting these 1/48th scale beauties years ago. Most of them are from the Franklin Mint but I do have a couple from Carousel and Hobby Master. I don't know what happened with Franklin Mint but, a few years ago, there products seemed to disappear or, if you could find them, were very pricey. I always liked the quality and workmanship of their product so... when I received an email from Aiken's Airplanes that they were having a sale on selected FM aircraft, I had to check it out. Low and behold there it was... an F6F Hellcat!! Finally I had found it at a decent price. Thank you Aikens for allowing me to complete my collection. My display case is now full. I've ordered form Aikens Airplanes several times and have never been disappointed. And, I must say, they ship very quickly which is very very important to me. Thank you!!
