Historical Note:

Dragon Models

Vehicle number 332 was a lumbering Elefant serving with 3.Kompanie of sPzJgAbt 653 in Poland in April 1944. The mighty tank hunter was armed with an 8.8cm PaK 43/2 gun, and was painted in a camouflage scheme of bold 'squiggles' of colour. Dragon Armor brings an exact replica of this very vehicle, complete with a beautiful scale rendition of the Elefant's anti-magnetic paste (called zimmerit by the Germans) used to prevent Russian mines from being attached to the hull. The tank destroyer has full detailing as well as an accurately weathered finish. The Elefant (Sd.Kfz. 184) was an anti-tank vehicle sometimes called the Ferdinand, after its designer Mr. Ferdinand Porsche. Ninety Elefanten were manufactured in just a few months during mid-1943. It was first deployed during the Battle of Kursk and, though destroying 320 Russian tanks, performed very poorly in other respects: many units broke down and they proved dangerously vulnerable to infantry, lacking a machine gun. They went on to serve in Italy in 1944 and the final units were involved in the Battle of Berlin.
