The PT-17 boasts a proud number of 8,584 units built and flying from the early 1930s – the time Stearman Aircraft began its production. The aircraft is commonly known as the Stearman or Kaydet and sometimes, since Stearman Aircraft was bought by Boeing, as the Stearman Boeing. The PT-17 plane was powered by a 220hp Continental R-670-5 radial engine. It had a maximum speed of 135mph, a service ceiling of 13,200ft and a climb rate ability of 578ft per minute. The Stearman Kaydet entered service primarily as a trainer aircraft. It served the US Army Air Force, the US Navy (as the NS & N2S), and the RCAF especially during the Second World War. Due to its role, the Kaydet was especially built to have a large tail-wheel undercarriage and a cockpit big enough to accommodate an instructor and a student. After serving the army, the Stearman PT-17 was sold to the civilian market. Until present time, the plane flies as sports or events planes, crop dusters, and stunt planes for air shows or exhibitions.
This handcrafted model is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen with a wealth of detail and makes a great gift for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff.
