In June 1943, future-President George H. W. Bush was commissioned as the youngest naval aviator at the time. Later, while flying a TBM with VT-51 (from the USS San Jacinto (CVL-30)), his Avenger was shot down on 2 September 1944 over the Pacific island of Chichi JimaHowever, he released his payload and hit the radio tower target before being forced to bail out over water. Both of his crewmates died. He was rescued at sea by the American submarine USS Finback (SS-230). He later received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Flying the Grumman TBF "Avenger" Torpedo Bomber (1944) (23:59)
The Grumman TBF "Avenger" torpedo bomber was President George H.W. Bush Sr's aircraft in World War 2. See the film used to train pilots to fly it.The Avenger was a tough and accurate aircraft that had a reputation for taking punishment and bringing it's crew home. It handled both bombs and torpedoes. Relatively easy to fly, the big Avenger was surprisingly nimble. The TBF could pack up to 500 lb bombs or one Mk1 13-2 torpedo, and with all three tanks topped up with 335 gallons of fuel, could strike targets up to 260 miles away. More than 7,500 TBF/TBM Avengers were produced in 20 variants, which fought with distinction in most major naval battles in the Pacific and was well liked by the Royal navy. It was also the heaviest single engine aircraft in World War 2. The "TBF" was the Grumman version; the "TBM" was produced my General Motors aircraft division. "See the TBF at an air show near you -- they're still flying!"
