US NAVY "BUNKER HILL" F4U CORSAIR This F4U-1D Corsair is an exact replica of the US Navy #176 that was launched from USS Bunker Hill during the war. The authentic markings on this aircraft designate various meanings and serve multiple purposes. The arrow up is a designation that the Navy assigned to all aircraft showing that the airplane was assigned to Bunker Hill. The yellow cowling was a temporary marking applied for Identification purposes, while the markings in front of the cockpit is actually tape applied to the seams of the plane to keep fuel from blowing back into the face of the pilot. Wing span measures approx. 10 inches. Historical Note: The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the greatest combat aircraft in World War II. It was the first US warplane to exceed 400 mph and outperformed all other American aircraft at that time. Some 12,571 Corsairs were made, the last being built in 1952. US Navy #176 flew off the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill during the war under the command of Roger Hedrick who commanded VF-84, then VF-17 with a final tally of twelve confirmed victories and four damaged by 26Feb1945.
