VMA-332 "POLKA DOTS" USS POINT CRUZ F4U CORSAIR
#6 IN THE KOREAN WAR SERIES
Spec Cast announces the "Korean War Aircraft Series" for 2001! This series will include "7" aircraft; four F-86 Saber Jets, one Corsair, one P-51 Mustang and one Twin Beech from the Korean War Theatre. Approximately 2500 of each plane will be produced.
Historical Note: The VMA-332 "Polka Dots" replaced VMA-312 "Checkerboards" just weeks before the truce in late July 1953. Reorganized in April 1953, VMA-332 was the sixth F4U squadron to see combat in Korea, flying missions from the carrier USS Bairoko (CVE-115) and also using forward airstrips on the Korean Peninsula. In the first phase of its deployment in Korea VMA-332 was tasked with ground-support missions that kept pressure on the North Koreans as armistice talks drew to a close. Equipped with a large number of 20mm cannon-armed F4U-4Bs, VMA-332 lived up to its "Attack" designation by delivering bombs, rockets and napalm to their targets. The unit remained on station until mid-December, ending the use of Marine F4Us on Carriers. They were the last squadron to fly F4U's in combat off a CVE!
