Historical Note:    During the Korean conflict, Maj. John H. Glenn, Jr., was one of a handful of U.S. Marine Corps pilots to fly with the U.S. Air Force.  He began hi combat duty in Korea with Marine Corps, flying Grumman F9F "Panther" jet fighters.  While stationed at K-3 airfield near Pohongdong, Korea, he was selected as an exchange pilot with the U.S. Air Force and began flying North American F86 "Sabre" Jets.  He soon became known as the "MiG Mad marine" and during his USAF tour, he shot down three North Korean MiG-15 jet fighters.

Glenn received world renown on February 20, 1962 when he became the first American to orbit this planet.  Piloting the "Friendship 7" Mercury speedcraft, he made three circuits around the earth.
