CHUCK  OLDER'S "FLYING TIGERS" P-40 WARHAWK

2nd in the MAS Series

Spec Cast introduces their second World War II Series! This Series is officially called the "Classic WWII Military Airplane Series" or "MAS". It features (3) types of aircraft and a total of (8) planes in the Series. Total numbers produced are projected to run approximately 2500 for each aircraft. Release dates are staggered beginning January 1, 2000 through December 1, 2000.

One of the 100 aircraft diverted from a Royal Air Force order and designated for service with China,   this American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) Curtiss Hawk H81-A3 (equivalent to the P-40C) arrived in Rangoon, Burma in May of 1941, where it was assembled as aircraft P-8109 and designated #68.   The AVG was formed in August of 1941, entering combat on December 20.   Assigned to the 3rd Squadron ("Hell's Angels"), this plane was flown   by AVG ace Charles Older.  The aircraft is shown as it appeared shortly before the Flying Tigers became part of the USAAF in 1942.

"The American Volunteer Group was led by retired US Army Air Corps officer Claire Lee Chennault,   and flew P-40s which were taken from a production run of P-40's (Tomahawk IIs) which were being built for the British Royal Air Force.  There were three squadrons, all originally equipped with the early P-40's, the later models not arriving until late March, 1942.  The original Tigers were officially credited with shooting down 286 enemy aircraft, with 200 more probables and 40 enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground.  Becoming a squadron commander in the USAAF, double AVG ace Charles Older continued to score victories, and later became a Los Angeles Superior Court judge."
