U.S. COAST GUARD GRUMMAN GOOSE

1941 Grumman Goose as flown by the United States Coast Guard, this exact replica was issued by Ertl Collectibles as a tribute to the historical role played by this search and rescue airplane ( see historical description). Unfortunately I didn't get the whole box in the picture. It shows this airplane circling around a downed AT-6, still on fire and smoking, and a life raft with two pilots waving/signaling for position to be picked up. A very cool box and airplane. This airplane has quite a bit of detail with hinge points, doors, hatches, floats, wing leading edge de-ice boots, windows, coin slot and hatch underneath for coin removal, working propellers and rotating rubber wheels. Measurements are 12 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches. Made of heavy die-cast metal.

Historical Note: A very versatile amphibian, the 1941 Grumman Goose was a  high-wing, all-metal monoplane equipped with twin Pratt & Whitney Wasp Jr. radial engines. With a top speed of 205 mph and maximum range of 1150 miles, this airplane was a heavy duty work horse on both land and water. Its two-step hull was divided into six watertight compartments and entry for the pilots and passengers was through a two-section door on the left, behind the wing. The 1941 Grumman Goose was widely purchased by the U.S. Military for service in WW II and flew with the U.S. Coast Guard where it was used in search-and -rescue and anti-submarine patrolling.
