"ELSIE" P-38 LIGHTNING

In 1937 the USAF required a new high performance fighter that had a faster maximum speed, higher rate of climb, and longer range. What the USAF got was the P-38 Lightning. Most notable for its work over the Pacific during WWII, "Ace of Aces" Major Richard I. Bong won 40 victories with this aircraft. The P-38 flew on two 1,475-hp engines and had a max speed of 414 mph. Its armament included four 12.7-mm machine guns, one 20-mm cannon, and 3,200 lbs. of bombs.
