Historical:

Mikasa is a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) in the late 1890s, and was the only ship of her class. The ship served as the flagship of Admiral TÌ´åÌ´ågÌ´åÌ´å HeihachirÌ´åÌ´å throughout the Russo-Japanese War of 19041905, including the Battle of Port Arthur on the second day of the war and the Battles of the Yellow Sea and Tsushima.

Less than a week after the end of the war, Mikasa's magazine exploded and sank the ship. She was salvaged and her repairs took over two years to complete. The ship supported Japanese forces during the Siberian Intervention in the Russian Civil War. After 1922, Mikasa was decommissioned in accordance with the Washington Naval Treaty and preserved as a museum ship at Yokosuka. She was badly neglected during the post-World War II Occupation of Japan and required extensive refurbishing in the later 1950s. Mikasa is the last remaining example of a pre-dreadnought battleship anywhere in the world. She was named after Mount Mikasa in Nara, Japan.

  1. A National History Day Manipulative sure to impress! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 9th Feb 2024

I bought this ship and a couple others for my students who are doing a project on the Battle of Tsushima for National History Day. They've all added quite a bit to the board and allowed the kids to have a nice manipulative to show off how much they've learned - and this is a VERY nice model. I wish it was a little bigger, but its still a decent size and overall a very nice piece.

Word of warning- the guidebooks that come with it ARE in Japanese, so be prepared for that!
