1945 U.S. NAVY XF4U-4 Corsair TEST AIRCRAFT

In search of a high speed, high altitude fighter aircraft, the U.S. Navy initiated a design competition in February of 1938 to increase its aerial firepower. The XF4U-1 built by Vought was the winner. A single-seat, single engine monoplane aircraft, the Corsair had aspirations of being the fastest,most powerful fighter ever built. First Flown on September 20, 1944, the F4U-4 was later approved for combat by the Navy in October of 1944. Initially utilized by the Marines, the F4U-4 had a top speed of 450 miles. The Corsair's  standard armament arrangement included six .50 caliber machine guns and rockets.

Gearbox Collectibles offers this 1945 XF4U-4 Corsair with the following features; precision modeling, heavy die-cast metal, custom detail cowling, working propeller, quality tampo graphics, rotating rubber wheels, folding wings, hidden coin bank and limited edition production. Wing span measures approximately 11 inches. Includes large stand with placque bearing descriptive information and also a mock runway underneath the aircraft.

Historical Note: This plane was the second version  of the Navy's attempt at improving the F4U-4 Corsair. Flown mainly at NATC Patuxent River, Maryland during January of 1945. The XF4U-4 was fitted with twin wing root pylons that could carry one thousand pound bombs or 154 gallon drop tanks. The engine cowling  was painted yellow with a red and black checkerboard pattern to signify its status as a test aircraft.
