1941 US NAVY F4F-3 GRUMMAN WILDCAT

New from Gearbox Collectibles (July 99), this US Navy Wildcat is a replica of F4F-3, #12 of VF-72 from the USS WASP (CV-7), in early 1941! This Wildcat contains the standard Navy pre-war color scheme. The fuselage is painted Aluminum with Chrome Yellow upper wings. The chevrons on the wings and the cowl band are gloss black outlined white. These along with the gloss black tail surface are the identification colors of the USS WASP. The neutrality star is also seen on the F4F-3 Wildcat's cowling! Features on this model include precision modeling, heavy die-cast metal, custom detail cowling, working prop, rotating rubber wheels, folding wings, 11 inch wing span, hidden coin bank and sturdy decorative stand with plaque!

Historical Note: The F4F Wildcats were first seen coming off the production line in January, 1940. A series of flight tests revealed problems with the fuel system. Six production aircraft were used and modified throughout 1940. By the end of the year the Navy had completed its evaluation of the F4F's and recommended acceptance (with other problems yet undetected). By December 31, 1940, twenty-two F4F Wildcats were in service by the Navy. VF-7 of the USS WASP and VF-4 of the USS RANGER were the first fleet squadrons to receive the F4F Wildcats!
