In 190, over 1,000 Sikorsky Black Hawk Helicopters were involved in early staging of Operation Desert Shield. On February 15th, Desert Shield became Desert Storm.... the Black Hawk proved it's metal by hauling troops, equipment and supplies throughout the complete theater of war. The Black Hawks carried special operations forces deep into Iraq, evacuated the wounded & Captured, deployed artillery and rescued downed aircrew. Black Hawks hauled members of the 101st Airborne deep into Iraq to outflank the entrenched enemy. With mission capable rates in excess of 85%, the Black Hawk was deemed one of the most reliable aircraft platforms during all of Desert Storm. Early system modifications included new "hard points" for external stores support system and the non-lifting wing enabled the Black Hawk to carry four 230 gallon or two 450 gallon external fuel tanks for greater range operations.
