HISTORICAL NOTE:    While the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft is extremely well known, the LC-130R is not quite as famous. The LC-130R is a ski-equipped variant of the C-130 designed for use in the Antarctic and Arctic. Purchased by the National Science Foundation in the mid-1970s, a total of five LC-130R aircraft were given more powerful engines and wing-mounted external fuel tanks.

One of these specialist aircraft (registration no. 73-3300) features in the Dragon Warbird range. The miniature is accurately produced in 1/400 scale. The model aircraft is resplendent in its high-visibility paint scheme, very necessary in the snowy environments in which the original aircraft operates. All details, including the retractable skis, have been accurately rendered and the level of finish is exemplary. The LC-130R aircraft continue to serve with the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard. Their primary mission is to support the scientific community at McMurdo Station and elsewhere in Antarctica.
