GERMAN "BLACK DOUBLE CHEVRON AND BARS" FW-190A-4
Category: WWII GERMAN Military Aircraft
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 first
appeared in August 1941, and its air superiority quickly earned itself the
nickname “Butcher Bird” from many opponents. The Fw 190 was an outstanding
single-seat fighter, with more than 20,000 manufactured in WWII. The 190A-4 was
introduced in June 1942, and it offered a methanol-water power-boost system, as
well as updated radio equipment. A new 1/72 scale Fw 190A-4 from Dragon Warbirds
has taken to the air, decked out in the markings of JG.54.
The original fighter was flown by Oberstleutnant Hannes Trautloft, whose first
combat experience was in the Spanish Civil War where he scored five victories.
In WWII he saw combat in Poland and France before being appointed Kommodore of
the newly established JG.54 on 25 August 1940. He participated in the Battle of
Britain, the Balkans campaign and Operation Barbarossa, before eventually
finishing with 58 aerial victories in his remarkable career, 45 of which were on
the Eastern Front. Trautloft’s “Black Double Chevron and Bars” Fucke-Wulf
aircraft is beautifully replicated in miniature by Dragon Warbirds, with one
distinctive element being the green heart insignia on the fuselage. The yellow
bands add a splash of color to the light gray color of this accurately detailed
model. This is a famous aircraft flown by a famous Luftwaffe ace, and it makes a
prized asset in any model aircraft collection.
