About the VF-103 "Jolly
Rogers":
One of the most well-known Navy fighter squadrons is the "Jolly
Rogers" Fighter Squadron VF-103, based at Naval Air Station Oceana,
Virginia.
The famous skull-and-crossbones design has been with the squadron since its
inception as VF-17 in 1943. The Jolly Rogers name and motif was handed down from
the squadron's first aircraft, the F4U Corsair. Traditions run deep in naval
aviation, so the name has been faithfully carried forward ever since.
About the F-14B Tomcat:
The F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, variable sweep wing, two-place
fighter designed to attack and destroy enemy aircraft at night and in all
weather conditions. The F-14 can track up to 24 targets simultaneously with its
advanced weapons control system and attack six with Phoenix AIM-54A missiles
while continuing to scan the airspace. Armament also includes a mix of other air
intercept missiles, rockets and bombs.
Manufactured by Grumman Aircraft Corporation, the F-14 employs variable geometry
wings to optimize aircraft performance throughout the flight envelope. The
multiple tasks of navigation, target acquisition, electronic counter measures (ECM),
and weapons firing are divided between the pilot and the radar intercept officer
(RIO).
The F-14B is either a remanufactured F-14A or new production aircraft, both
equipped with F110-GE-400 engines, which replaced the TF30-P-414A engines.
