SUPER HEAVY SELF-PROPELLED MORTAR 60 CM MORSER "ZIU"
Category: WWII German Military Vehicle
Germany produced some massive
pieces of weaponry in WWII, and few were more massive than the Mörser Karl
series of 60cm siege mortars. Each of the six mortars built weighed in at around
124 tons! The weapons could be self-propelled on their tracks for short
distances (normally just for aiming), though they were generally transported by
rail on a pair of bogies. Capable of firing a 2-ton shell a distance of 6.8km,
the 60cm Mörser Karl (Gerät 040) was first used on the Eastern Front against
the Brest Fortress. To increase the extremely short range of the weapon system,
a 54cm gun barrel was subsequently manufactured and fitted to three of the Mörser
Karls (now designated Gerät 041), which increased the range to 10.4km.
Dragon Armor has released a mightily impressive 1/35 scale model of the sixth
gun to be built, which was named “Ziu”. This particular gun, “Ziu”, was
famously employed in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The model is fully assembled
and pre-painted, and is ready for immediate display…as long as collectors can
clear enough space for it! It constitutes an impressive model thanks to its
sheer size and bulk though fortunately it doesn’t weigh nearly as much as the
original mortar! This Dragon Armor item is full of intricate detail, and it is
presented in firing mode with the chassis lowered. The three-color camouflage
scheme is particularly well done, and represents the work of true craftsmen. As
a special bonus, a huge shell is included with this assembled model, which gives
a sense of the sheer scale of this weapon. The real gun could attain a rate of
fire of only six rounds per hour, and its strategic success was limited at best,
but as a model, this 135 scale “Ziu” is unbeatable in its “shock and
awe” effect!

About the Self -Propelled Mortar:
Originally ordered in June 1937, development of Germany’s new self-propelled
60cm siege mortar was supervised by General Karl Becker. Thus, it’s not
surprising that the name “Karl” is often used to describe this particular
Gerät 040 weapon! One prototype and six production versions of these 124-ton
weapons were delivered between November 1940 and August 1941. They were fitted
with a short-barreled 60cm L/8.44 mortar, and they saw combat service in such
places as Lemberg and Sevastopol on the Eastern Front.
