"I WANT YOU FOR THE US ARMY"
WWI AND WWII US RECRUITMENT POSTER
FORWARD MARCH - RECRUITS (SERIES III)
Available: DEC 2007
Originally published as the cover for the July 6, 1916, issue of Leslie's Weekly with the title "What Are You Doing for Preparedness?" this portrait of "Uncle Sam" went on to become one of the most widely recognizable symbols of the United States around the world, and according to its creator, James Montgomery Flagg - "the most famous poster in the world." Over four million copies were printed between 1917 and 1918 as the United States entered WWI. Because of its overwhelming popularity, the image was later adapted for use in WWII. Uncle Sam pointing at the viewer was inspired by a British recruitment poster showing Lord Kitchener in a similar pose. They used his face for that of Uncle Sam (adding age and his white goatee) simply to avoid the trouble of arranging for a model.
