"SOLDIER - TAKE CARE OF YOUR G.I. AND IT WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU!"

WWII US RECRUITMENT POSTER

FORWARD MARCH - RECRUITS (SERIES III)

This WWII poster was created to encourage young servicemen and women and provide hope for prosperity after the war.  During WWII the G.I. Bill of Rights was created to prevent a repeat of the Bonus March of 1932, and a relapse into the Great Depression after the war ended.  The Bill enabled all former servicemen to receive $20 once a week for 52 weeks a year while they looked for work.  Less than 20 percent of the money set aside for the 52-20 club (as it was known) was distributed.  Rather, most returning servicemen quickly found jobs or pursued higher education.  The G.I. Bill of Rights provided veterans with money for education and cost the federal government billions of dollars in the short term, but as those young people went on to graduate and get better paying jobs, the government more than remade its investment in increased tax revenues paid by these workers.  As a whole, the bill helped to democratize the "American Dream".
