Historical Note:    Descended from the famed "Black Sheep" Squadron of WWII, VMA-214 flew A-4 Skyhawks for 27 years.  its first A-4Bs were accepted in January 1962, and the unit duly retired its final A-4Ms in May 1989.  This particular jet was delivered to VMA-214 at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California, in the late 1970s.  Initially flown in the traditional gull grey over white scheme, the aircraft was toned down through the application of tactical paint scheme greys in the early 1980s.  Finally retired from service in 1992 after several years of use by the Marine Corps Reserve following VMA-214s switched to AV-8B Harrier IIs, BuNo 160027 was scrapped at Naval Air Depot Cherry Point, South Carolina, in April of the following year.
