Historical Note: Rector scored a kill in the American Volunteer Group’s first combat on 20 December 1941 over Kunming, China. Accepting a USAAF commission to command the 76th FS of the newly-formed 23rd FG following the AVG’s disbandment, he scored a confirmed kill and a probable in ‘White 104’ on 4 July 1942 over Hengyang, China. This aircraft was one of the first P-40Es delivered to the AVG, and it carried a Disney-designed flying tiger decal on its fuselage. Fellow AVG aces Bruce Holloway, ‘Ajax’ Baumler and John Alison also flew ‘White 104’ at various times, and it is seen here as it appeared in December 1942 after Holloway had claimed his fifth kill in it.
