Historical Note:    For almost 50 years the Lockheed C-130 Hercules has served as a cargo aircraft for military forces around the world. Originally designed as a troop carrier and cargo aircraft, the C-130 has also been used as a gunship, for aerial refuelling, aerial firefighting and more. The United States Coast Guard uses the C-130 for long range surveillance and transport. As one of the country's five armed services, the United States Coast Guard has a rich history dating back to 1790. At that time, Congress approved the building of ships to help prevent smuggling and enforce tariff laws. The USCG is one of the oldest organizations of the Federal Government. Until the Navy was started in 1798, it served as the nation's only armed force afloat. During times of peace, they assist the department of Homeland Security.
