Historical Note: Avro Lancaster, R5868, was delivered to No.83 Squadron at Scampton on 29th June 1942. After several sorties, the 'Lanc' was transferred to No.467 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, based at Bottesford. Here it was given the code letters "PO-S'(Sugar). It made several further successful raids on Germany before the Squadron moved to Waddington on 11th November 1943. On 23rd April 1945, 'Sugar' made its last sortie-it's one hundred and thirty-seventh to Flensberg, but did not drop its bombs as the allied Forces had occupied the town. At the end of an amazing operational career, R5868 was flown to Wroughton, where it was struck off charge on 16th March 1956 and then moved to Scampton in 1959 for service as a gate guardian. On 24th November 1970, R5868 was dismantled and removed to Bicester for refurbishment. On 12th march 1972, it was moved to the RAF Museum at Hendon, London where it can be seen on display today.
