Historical Note:    In 1955, Navy Air Development Squadron VX-6 was involved in the exploration of the Antarctic land mass under 'Operation Deep Freeze'.  Initially equipped with Douglas R4Ds (a Navy version of the C-47 Dakota), it was then equipped with P2V Neptunes and received its first two C-130 Hercules in 1960, including 148319.  By the end of "Deep Freeze 61", these and a third aircraft had lifted over 1,800 tons of supplies between Pole and Byrd stations; they also flew the longest ever trans- Antarctic flight, the 2,800-mile journey from McMurdo Sound to set up a scientific field station at Eight's Coast on Bellingshausen Sea. On 15th January 1975, 149319 crash-landed, resulting in a new wing and engine having to be fitted on site.
