AVRO LANCASTER MR.3 - SCHOOL OF MARITIME RECONNAISSANCE

POST WAR AIR DEFENSE

The immediate postwar saw a lot of older aircraft decommissioned or put to peacekeeping duties, while many of the other aircraft were adapted for a variety of alternative uses like search-and-rescue, reconnaissance and personal carrying until they, too, were superseded by the explosion of jet aircraft from the 1950s onwards.

Historical Note:    After WWII, there were many redundant bomber aircraft including several Avro Lancasters, all of which had to be adapted to a peace-time role rather than just being broken up.  RAF Coastal Command's School of Maritime Reconnaissance (later being renamed No.1 Maritime Reconnaissance School) was formed at RAF Station St. Mawgan, Cornwell, on January 1, 1955.  It belonged to No. 19 Group.  The school's role was to instruct students in all facets of air-sea warfare using the Avro Lancaster Gr.Mk.3.  The school's Lancasters were the last of that type flown operationally by the Royal Air Froce.
