HISTORICAL NOTE: The Harrier was the world’s first practical operational V/STOL strike fighter and was developed for six years’ experience with the Hawker P.1127/Kestrel series of demonstrators. Powered by a single Rolls-Royce BS Pegasus 102 engine, the first Harrier GR.1 flew on 28th December 1967, entering service on 1 April 1969 with the Harrier Conversion Unit , which formed at RAF Wittering, Cambs, This was renamed No.233 Operational Conversion Unit in 1971 and became the school for all Harrier pilots to learn on the type, remaining operational today with the Harrier GR.7 & T.10. Harrier GR.1, XV762 joined the HCU/233 OCU in 1970 and remained with the school, being upgraded to a GR.3 variant by 1975.
