HISTORICAL NOTE:    The Lightning F.Mk.3 differed from earlier variants in having a square-cut fin of 15% greater area, deletion of built-in cannon armament, more advanced A123B radar, which allowed equipment of either Red Top collision-course missiles or Firestreak. No.56 Squadron, at RAF Wattisham, Suffolk, re-equipped from the Lightning F.Mk.1A to the F.Mk.3 early in 1965., following No.111 Squadron also based there. The latter had formed a display team with their Lightnings in 1965, as No.56 Squadron had done in 1963, and painted their new mounts with a very smart black and yellow trim. With the friendly inter-squadron rivalry, not wishing to be ‘outdone’, No.56 Squadron painted their new Lightning F.3s with the entire tail fin in red and white checks as the ultimate in colorful squadron markings!
