New line from OXFORD DIECAST WWII MILITARY AIRCRAFT SERIES!

Historical Note:    The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser during the early to mid 1930s. It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, including such features as an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, a retractable landing gear, and was powered by liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aero engines. The 109 first saw operational service during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II, during which time it was the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. From the end of 1941 the Bf 109 was supplemented by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190.

Originally conceived as an interceptor, later models were developed to fulfill multiple tasks, serving as bomber escort, fighter bomber, day-, night- all-weather fighter, bomber destroyer, ground-attack aircraft, and as reconnaissance aircraft. It was supplied to and operated by several states during World War II, and served with several countries for many years after the war. The Bf 109 was the most produced warplane during World War II, with 30,573 examples built during the war, and the most produced fighter aircraft in history, with a total of 33,984 units produced up to April 1945.

The Bf 109 was flown by the three top-scoring German fighter aces of World War II, who claimed 928 victories among them while flying with Jagdgeschwader 52, chiefly on the Eastern Front, as well as by the highest scoring German ace in the North African Campaign. It was also flown by several other successful aces from Germany's allies, notably Finland, including the highest scoring non-German ace Ilmari Juutilainen, and pilots from Romania, Croatia and Hungary. Through constant development, the Bf 109 remained competitive with the latest Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war.

A technological marvel when it first flew in 1935, the Bf-109 served on all fronts through the entire war. With a top speed of 350 miles per hour at altitude, the Bf 109E-3 variant of the fighter was powered by the latest Daimler Benz 1200 horsepower engine. It incorporated a stronger canopy and more cockpit armour. The Bf 109E-3 replaced wing machine guns found on earlier variants with much more destructive 20mm cannons. It's adversaries in the forthcoming Battle of Britain would possess less firepower. The Battle of Britain, 1940For three months, the Bf 109 engaged the Hurricanes and Spitfires of the RAF in a momentous struggle for air superiority over the Great Britain. By the end of October 1940, the British had lost 1,149 airplanes, mostly fighters. The Luftwaffe lost almost 1,800 aircraft, one third of them Bf 109s.By war's end over 34,000 Bf 109s had been built. The War Years coonects real-world product designs with the ww2 military history that inspired them. 1. Outstanding Detail with a Reasonable Price

Posted by Joseph J Palkowski, MD on 10th Jun 2013

I have been collecting die cast WWII German aircraft for many years. Most of my purchases we made here with Aiken's. This particular model was new to me and I was a little skeptical before I received it. What a pleasant surprise I had when I opened the box. For the price, this is a great little piece. The detail is very, very good, the paint schemes and markings are accurate and I couldn't ask for more. Good job to Oxford and also to Aiken's for carrying this product. I have purchased 2 more since this purchase and will purchase more. 5 stars!!
