SPAD XIII - FRENCH

In 1916 a new plane was delivered to the Allied forces, the Spad VII (later XIII). Powered by a V8 Hispano Suiza of 150 hp, it reached a maximum speed of 192 kph or 119 mph. One of the first was delivered to a 21 year old lieutenant in the Escadrille de Chasse N3. Whose name was George Guynemer. Guynemer went on to shoot down 54 enemy aircraft. His group of fellow pilots all flew Spad XIII’s. They were known as Les Cigognes, The Storks, and were highly successful in aerial combat. Guynemer became a popular hero in France, and to this day his Spad is known by it’s nickname ‘Vieux Charles’.
