SOPWITH F.1 CAMEL

Historical Note:        The Sopwith Camel F.1 is a single-seat fighter aircraft which became famous for its maneuverability.

The first Camel prototype first flew in December 1916 and was powered by a 110 hp Clerget 9Z.  It was known as the "Big Pup" during its early development.  It entered service on June 1917 together with No. 70 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps.  By February 1918, 13 squadrons were fully equipped with the camel and approximately, there were 5,500 produced.  The Camel F.1 was the main production version armed with twin synchronised Vickers gun.  The F.1 Camel has a maximum speed of 115 mph and a range of 300 mi ferry.

Only seven authentic Sopwith Camels survived, with one in the United States.  One authentic Sopwith Camel currently resides at the Aerospace Education Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Another Camel was restored to near-flying condition at the Brussels Air Museum Restoration Society (BAMRS) in Belgium. A sample Camel model can be found at the Polish Aviation Museum.  A replica of Sopwith Camel can be found t the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.  Another replica is currently under construction by the Northern Aeroplane Workshops for the Shuttleworth Collection.
