Historical Note Cont'd:    The Piper PA-18 Super Cub is a two-seat, single-engine airplane developed from the PA-11. Introduced in 1949 by Piper Aircraft, Super Cubs are commonly found in roles such as bush flying, banner and glider towing, and other situations where short field performance is required. Over the years, several companies have offered various plans and kits based on the Super Cub for home construction.

While based on the design of the earlier Cubs, the PA-18 is a very different flying experience, with the addition of an electrical system, flaps and a more powerful engine. It retained the basic “rag and tube” (fabric stretched over a steel tube frame) structure of the earlier J-3 Cub. The Super Cub can take off in about 400 feet at gross weight and land in about 300 feet because of the flaps. Later versions with new engines allowed take off in about 200 feet. The Super Cub is a classic aircraft whose simplicity and performance has guaranteed it legendary status.

Like the J-3 and PA-11, most Super Cubs were initially used as working airplanes. They served as trainers, dusters and sprayers, banner towers, pipeline and bowerlike patrollers, border patrollers, military liaison aircraft, bush planes and more.
