Historical Note Cont'd: Q-ships or Q-boats were disguised as merchant vessels, carrying cannons, depth charges and anti-submarine equipment. Q-ships were also known as Decoy Vessels, Special Service Ships or Mystery Ships.
Mystery Ships were used as a bait to attract and then sink German U-boats during World War I primarily by Britain and were later used in World War II by the United States. Mystery Ships were created when Britain was in desperate need for a countermeasure against the U-boats strangling its sea lanes by luring those U-boats to the surface. Mystery Ships is one of the most closely-guarded secrets of the war. The Mystery Ship would pose as an easy target for the U-boat but it does carry hidden armament. On June 23, 1915, the first victory of a Q-ship was achieved. During World War II, there were nine Mystery Ships commissioned by the Royal Navy in September and October 1939 to serve in the North Atlantic: Chatsgrove, Maunder, Prunella, Lambridge, Edgehill, Brutus, Cyprus, Looe and Antoine.
