Historical Note Cont'd: The Boeing 727 was, for a very long time, the most popular jet-liner in the world. The 727 first took to the skies during the 1960s, much earlier than its bigger and more famous sister the Boeing 747. Through its exceptional fuel efficiency it can fly both long- and short-range routes. Range with max payload 3965km (2140nm), The 727-200 remains popular with passengers and pilots but it does not meet Stage 3 noise requirements.
The 727-200, part of the Boeing 727 family, had its first flight on July 27 1967, with certification granted in late November that year. It had increased gross weight and a 20-foot longer fuselage that could accommodate as many as 189 passengers in an all-tourist configuration. In all its variations, 1,245 of the -200s were sold. The 727-200 helped broaden the sales appeal of the 727 considerably and snared significant sales.
Structural improvements, a more powerful engine and greater fuel capacity led to the Advanced 727-200 in May 1971. This advanced series had improved payload/range capability, better runway performance and a completely restyled "widebody look" as standard equipment. The last version, the 727-200F, had a 58,000-pound, 11-pallet cargo capability. Fifteen of these were sold to Federal Express.
A total of 493 Boeing 727-200 aircraft remain in airline service.
