Air France is a Paris-based airline that operates worldwide scheduled passenger and cargo services to 185 destinations in 83 countries. In 1988, it became a launch customer for the A-320 narrowbody twin. The A320 is a short-to-medium range commercial passenger aircraft manufactured by Airbus. On June 26, 1988, Flight 296, a brand new A320 of Air France crashed near the airfield of Mulhouse Habsheim, in the Franco-German border region of Alsace, during an airshow. The plane overflew the airfield in good weather, but seconds later it struck the tops of trees behind the runway and crashed into a forest. Three passengers died in the accident and about fifty were injured.
