Historical Note Cont'd:      The world’s first production tiltrotor aircraft, the V-22 Osprey is a joint service, multi-mission aircraft which can operate like a helicopter because of its vertical take-off and landing capability (VTOL). It also has the long-range cruise abilities of a twin, turboprop aircraft. It made its first flight in March 1989.

The V-22 Osprey is a vertical takeoff and landing transport type of aircraft. It was manufactured by Bell Helicopter Textron and Boeing Helicopters. Its maiden flight was on the 19th of March 1989 and it was introduced commercially on the 8th of December 2005. Its primary users are the United States Marine Corps, and United States Air Force.

The Osprey was developed and some of its portions were manufactured from different counties such as Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. It was a joint development known as Bell Boeing. In June of 2005, the aircraft’s operational evaluation was completed. On the 28th of September 2005, the V-22 production has been approved by the Pentagon.

There are many incidents that had happened before the production of the helicopter. Such incidents are failures while it was being tested. On the 11th of June 1991, the aircraft control system got miswired which led to two minor injuries. On the 20th of June 1992, the plane dropped into the Potomac River due to the leaking gearbox that caught fire. On the 8th of April 2000, the aircraft was loaded with Marines for a rescue but it descended quickly from an unusual high altitude that caused its right rotor to stall at 245 feet, roll over, crash, and explode. This unfortunately caused the lives of the nineteen people on board. On the 11th of December 2000, the V-22 had a hydraulic leak that was caused by a wiring bundle rubbing.
