Historical Note Cont'd:      The Robinson R22 was developed in the year 1972 by Frank Robinson, founder of the Robinson Helicopter Company. The R22 is a small, light, two-person helicopter, powered by a Lycoming piston engine and developed from the start for low operating and maintenance costs. The Robinson R22 two-blade rotor system was designed around a patented three-hinge coupling, dampers and hydraulics. An elastic teeter hinge stop was included lately to forbid the rotors from striking the tail boom while winding upward or running downward in gusting winds.

The first prototype of the R-22 flew for the first time in August 28, 1975. Due to the loss of the prototype, certification of the R22 was delayed until March 1979. Despite this setback, the R22 was a long success, and several hundreds had been ordered by the time the first were delivered from October 1979. The R-22 sold rapidly and in 1983 a modified R-22A was certified to undertake the IFR training and coordinate with the U.S. Police Forces who had shown interest. Over 500 of these models were sold world-wide and in August 1985 the latest R-22 Beta example was announced.

A large amount of variants and developments of the Robinson R22 have been offered. These include the improved R22 Alpha, which was introduced in 1983, and the highly developed R22 Beta from 1985. The R22 Mariner is loaded with floats, while the R22 Police version is fitted with particular special communications gear, a searchlight, siren and loudspeaker. The R22 Agricultural is fitted with tanks and booms for agricultural spraying. And lastly, the R22 IFR is fitted with IFR instrumentation for chopper IFR flight training.
