Historical Note Cont'd: The Messerschmitt Me-262 Schwalbe (Swallow) was the world's first operational turbojet fighter aircraft. It was produced in world War II and saw action starting in 1944 as a multi-role fighter/bomber/reconnaissance/interceptor warplane for the Lutwaffe.
The Me-262 Schwalbe (Swallow) first flew on July 18 1942.
Its speed outclassed any plane flying at that time. However, senior
members of the Lutwaffe remained cautious since the plane flew so fast in
testing did not. The Me-262
Me-262 was officially named Schwalbe which pertains to a swallow, and that when
in a dive, is one of the fastest birds known. German pilots nicknamed it
the Turbo, while the Allies called it the "Stormbird".
While the Me-262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war, with 509 claimed Allied kills, for more than 100 Me-262 losses, its design had a strong influence on postwar aircraft development.
The Me-262 was already being developed as project P.1065 before the start of World War II.
