DO-335 ARROW GERMAN
Historical Note: The origins of the Do 335 trace back to World War I when Claudius Dornier designed a number of flying boats featuring remotely driven propellers and later, due to problems with the drive shafts, tandem engines.
The Dornier Do 335 Pfeil Arrow is a World War II heavy fighter built by the Dornier Company. The Pfeil's operation was often greater than others with similar design due to its unusual "push-pull" layout. The Luftwaffe was desperate to get the design into squadron use, but delays in engine deliveries meant that only a handful was delivered before the war ended.
The origins of the Dornier Do 335's original layout can be traced back to World War I when Claude Dornier designed a number of flying boats featuring tandem engines. The same structure was also used on the really productive post-war Wal and Do 18. In a tandem layout the engines are mounted in consecutive pairs, the front engine 'pulling' and the back one 'pushing’. This engine arrangement was subsequently adopted by the highly successful Dornier Do J Wal (Whale) flying boat in 1922.
