
F-16C FALCON - "BLOCK 60"
Historical Note: The F-16C Block 60 version is the latest in the USAF's modifications to their elite fighter the F-16. It has the latest in extended fuel capacity, changes in the air intakes and the latest avionics package.
The F-16 Falcon is a multi-role fighter type of aircraft. It was manufactured by General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin. Its maiden flight was on the 2nd of February 1974 and it was introduced on the 17th of August 1978. Its primary user was the United States Air Force.
The F-16 was designed and developed to be a cost effective workhorse to perform different kinds of missions and maintain its readiness. It uses advanced aerodynamics and avionics which include the use of the fly-by-wire for the first time. The F-16 Falcon was nicknamed “the electric jet”.
The F-16s entered the service and participated in a number of conflicts which mostly happened in the Middle East. In 1981, eight aircrafts joined a raid that caused the destruction of Osiraq. On the same year the Israeli Air Force managed to shoot down a Syrian Mi-8 helicopter and a MiG-21 and that became the first air to air kills for the series of F-16s. On the 7th of June 2006, the F-16s carrying two air strikes managed to destroy the al-Qaeda safe house which was the cause of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi’s death.
