Historical Note Cont'd: Manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation (GAC) Savannah, Georgia, the C-20 is a military modification of the commercial Gulfstream aircraft. The C-20 aircraft provide distinguished visitor (DV) airlift for military and government officials. They support the long range/low passenger load DV airlift niche, offering worldwide access while including a communications suite which supports worldwide secure voice and data communications for the DV and staff.
The Gulfstream C-20H is a transport VIP and a liaison aircraft owned and operated by the US Air Force.
The squadron has 20 crews flying 10 C-20 (Gulfstream III/IV) aircraft for low capacity (3,500 nm/12 passengers) missions. Primary missions for both squadrons include Presidential backup, First Lady and Vice Presidential travel, and support to other senior government officials. As previously noted, 457 AS flies C-21 (Lear 35) aircraft in the OSA role. This squadron will be addressed in a subsequent section with other OSA units. The 1 HS has 26 crews flying 21 UH-1 "Huey" helicopters. The unit maintains alert commitments and provides support of VIP airlift missions in the Washington, D.C. area.
There are approximately 50 Gulfstream IV and IV-SP's are in service with over 19 governments worldwide.
