The B-52 Stratofortress is a strategic bomber and is commonly referred to as the “Big Ugly Fat Fellow”. It was manufactured by Boeing. Its maiden flight was on the 15th of April 1952 but was introduced in February 1955. Its primary user was the United States Air Force. As of now eighty-five (85) units of the B-52 are still active and nine (9) are reserved.

On the 23rd of November 1645 the Air Materiel Command issued their desired performance for the strategic bomber to have. They wanted it to have five plus turret gunners and six man relief crews. Also, they wanted the aircraft to be armed with unspecified number of 20 millimeter cannons and 10,000 pounds of bombs. On the 13th of February 1946, the Air Force issued the specification and presented bid invitations to Boeing, Consolidated Aircraft, and Glenn L. Martin Company to send in their proposals.

The B-52 Stratofortress did many things in service, including the time when the B-52B dropped the first live hydrogen bomb above the Bikini Atoll on the 21st of May 1956. And on the 24th to 25th of November of the same year, eight B-52 aircrafts flew nonstop around the North America perimeter. During the Operation Power Flite on the 16th to 18th of January 1957, three aircrafts flew nonstop around the world. More notable actions were made the B-25 Stratofortress.
