B-47E STRATOJET
Historical Note: The B-47 Stratojet was a strategic bomber manufactured by Boeing. Its maiden flight was on the 17th of December 1947 and commercially introduced in June 1951. Its primary user was the United States Air Force. As of today fifteen B-47s are on static display. It was the world’s first swept-wing bomber and was in the service from 1951 to 1965 under the USAF Strategic Air Command.
The B-47 Stratojet’s main function is being a tactical medium range bomber and accommodate three flight crews; the pilot, co-pilot, and the navigator. It uses six general electric J-47-GE-25 turbojet engines at 7,200lb each; Jet Assisted Take-Off (JATO) using auxiliary rocket motors that are jettisoned after take-off. It has a length of 107 ft; wingspan of 116 ft; and weight (when empty) of 79,074 lb and maximum takeoff of 230,000 lb. It has a speed of 600 mph; ceiling of 40,500ft; and range of 4,000 mi. It also has armaments such as the two 20mm cannons in remote tail turret and internal bombs of 20,000-25,000lbs.
It was the first production bomber to use the bicycle type landing gear. During the time the B-47 was delivered to the Air Force a lot of pilots were excited to fly the hot new bomber. The B-47 was handled well and comfortably in flight. The aircraft was turned by the Air Force into an operational aircraft, slow on take-off but fast on landings. This was not a good combination in some circumstances.
