B-29 SUPERFORTRESS "ENOLA GAY"

Historical Note:       In August 1945, a specially outfitted B-29, "Enola Gay", flown by Col. Paul Tibbetts, released a bomb, code-named "Little Boy". The historic event of that fateful day over Hiroshima spawned the atomic age, and brought America its long awaited victory.

The B-29 Superfortress was one of the largest aircrafts during World War II and one of the most advanced bombers during that time. The B29 Superfortress has a lot of new modern features like the pressurized cabin, remote control gun turrets and a central fire control system. The B-29 was a high altitude bomber during day time and low altitude during night. The B29 Superfortress was the primary weapon against Japan during World War II. The B29 Superfortress remained in service unlike the other aircraft bombers. A few B-29s were used as flying television transmitters for Stratovision.

On June 15, 1944, forty-seven B-29 Superfortresses from Chegdu China were launched. The B29 from China was used to attack the Imperial and Steel Works at Yawata Japan. The Superfortress was also used in raids in China and India. On October 12, 1944, twenty-nine B-29 Superfortresses arrived in Saipan and some were used in the first combat mission which took place in Truk Island on October 28, 1944.

Of all the B-29 Superfortresses, the most eminent was the Enola Gay, the aircraft that dropped the very first atomic bomb on Hiroshima back in August 6, 1945. The faith of Enola Gay is said to be written in the Manhattan project which was the secret military project code.
