USAF "DOOLITTLE RAIDERS" B-25 MITCHELL
*** HAND SIGNED BY: COPILOT RICHARD COLE, THOMAS GRIFFIN AND DAVID M. JONES
Historical Note: As dawn broke on 18 April 1942, this B-25 flown by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle and his co-pilot Colonel Richard Cole was the first of the lumbering bombers to catapult down the heaving deck of the USS Hornet on their way to bomb Tokyo.
The B-25 Mitchell Bomber was the successor of the early XB-21 plan in mid-1930s. A NA-40 was built, with several modifications subsequently being done to assess the amount of prospective improvements. The North American Aviation supplied three good aircrafts. These were the Texan, Mustang and the Mitchell. During that time, the Mustang was considered the famous among the three but the Mitchell was the most important. Built in big amount and proving its worth in both the theaters of war in the Pacific and European.
In 1942, the B-25 Mitchell gave the Americans’ best victories during the World War when Jimmy Doolittle raiders swept over Japan to put them down. The B-25 Bomber pilot was flown by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle and Colonel Richard Cole as his co-pilot.
