Historical Note: B-25J Mitchell is one of the variants of the Mitchell aircrafts. It was produced in over 4000 till the end of the war. There were two main versions of the aircraft. Both of the versions maintained the defensive weapons of the B-25H. The majority of the B-25 Mitchell has strap-on gun packs on the side of the fuselage even if these were frequently detached. Selection of mixture of guns was fitted in the ground to go well with circumstances.
The B-25J Mitchell was the final version. It was somewhat similar to the B-25A, B-25B and B-25C models. The 75mm cannon were removed from the B-25J because it was not doing well. As an alternative, 800 of B-25J models were built with a solid nose controlling .50 caliber machine guns while the other models were built with the “Greenhouse” style nose for bombardier’s spot. In spite of the style used, all of the B-25J models have two .50 caliber guns placed below the pilot’s location and two more guns placed below the co-pilot’s compartment.
The B-25J Mitchell aircraft carries a total of 18 .50 caliber guns. Eight in the nose, four in under cockpit packages, two in an upper turret, two in the waist compartment and a pair in the tail. No other bomber during the Second World War carried as numerous guns. The first 555 of B-25J models does not have fuselage package guns because they found out that the muzzle blow ups from the guns were the reason for the severe stress in the fuselage. The later B-25J models returned the guns but they were sometimes removed for field adjustments. A total of 4,318 B-25J Mitchells were built.
