USAAF A-20G HAVOC
Historical Note: The A-20 Havoc was originally built for the French and British as a night fighter before America entered the war. In addition, the USSR accepted over 3,000 of these aircraft through the Lend-Lease program. Havocs were used in Europe and the Pacific.
The A-20 Havoc is probably one of the most versatile aircraft ever made in history. The A-20 had several roles and was originally designed with a standard bomber glass nose, however the later versions of A-20 Havoc had solid nose having multiple machine guns. The A-20 Havoc served various Allied air forces, predominantly, the air forces of the Soviet Union, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, South Africa France, Netherlands and Brazil. The USSAF was the one who assigned the popular name of the aircraft “A-20 Havoc” which was adopted from the RAF classification.
There are two versions of A-20 Havoc, both ordered by the Air Corps. One was to be powered by turbo supercharged Wright R-2600-7 radials and the other was to be a high altitude light bomber with performance adequate to make it fundamentally resistant to interception. Some of the A-20 Havocs were equipped with radar equipment and re-designated as P-70s. The P-70 was used as a night fighter but were replaced by the P-61 Black widow in 1944
